History of coins-Silver dollars
76I love Silver dollars. They are so fun to collect.I will go through the history of Silver dollars with pictures. If you haven't seen the other hubs in this series, the links are below.
Spanish 8 Reales
8 Reale Standard
The original 13 colonies did not have there own money supply.Almost everything that needed a monetary exchange used the Spanish 8 Reales. They were called "milled dollars"because the blanks or planchets were milled to make sure they were consistently the same weight.
Our forefather's knew we couldn't and shouldn't rely on a outside source for our money and they built the mint in Philadelphia.
Flowing Hair
The very first United States silver dollar issued was in 1794.The flowing hair dollar was minted from 1794-1795.I would love to have one;Santa, are you listening?
Again,as in my other hubs, from dimes to dollars, they were primarily silver until 1965.
Draped Bust
From 1795-1804 the design changed to the draped bust. Also a very beautiful design. The great thing about silver dollars is:they are large enough to see all the intricate details.

Seated Liberty
From 1840-1873 the Seated Liberty design was minted. This is a very beautiful coin.Intricate detail makes it quite the collector item.
Trade Dollar
In response to trade in the orient the United States had to have a dollar that matched the silver content of "crowns".The Trade dollar was minted from 1873-1883.It does have a higher silver content. If collecting these be careful, there are many counterfeits out there.
Morgan Dollar
Probably my favorite collector coin is the Morgan dollar. It was named after the designer,George Morgan.they wee minted from 1878-1904 and then they minted them one more year in 1921.The main reason for the Morgan dollar was the discovery of the comstock lode,a major silver find in Nevada. The mint put out lots of Morgan dollars. In the 1960's our government found bags of them in vaults in Ft. Knox.
Peace Dollar
Originally it was going to be a commerative for the end of world war 1.It was so popular it was put into circulation. They were minted from 1921-1928 and again in 1934 and 1935.They are beautiful coins!
Eisenhower dollar
The "Ike" dollar was minted from 1971-1978.It is a clad content. There were special silver ones made for collectors. In 1976{the bicentennial year}the back had a slightly different design for that one year.
Susan B. Anthony
This coin depicted Susan B. Anthony, the fighter for women's suffrage. It was minted from 1979-1981 and again in 1999.There were problems in that it resembled and was close to the size of a quarter. It was highly disliked by the general public.
Sacagewa Dollar
From 2000 until now we have had Sacagewa dollars. They are a golden color so they are not mistaken for quarters. The mint has also started a presidential series of dollars that I believe are going to depict all of our Presidents. Those are not pictured, there will be a wide variety.Great for collecting!
Silver Eagles
Since 1986 the mint has produced silver eagles. The one you see here is the front only. The back has an eagle. They are made for collectors and are priced at or near the price of one ounce of silver.
These are great collector coins!!!

I have some Ikes and a few Susan B Anthony's. Again, these ones are cool. I guess I just like the big coins because they are unusual.
