Most Expensive
The highest price paid for any one coin was $7,590,020.00.The reason behind the outrageous price is quite interesting.
In the 1930's the U.S. was in a crunch.The banks had a crisis.To save it Franklin Roosevelt and his cabinet made it illegal to own gold with the gold reserve act.All 1933 gold double eagles were supposed to be melted.Some were stolen and one ended up in the hands of King Farouk of Egypt.
When the King was ousted in a coup the coin disappeared.It reappeared in the hands of a British coin dealer.The United States treasury cofiscated the coin and it was sold at auction in 2002.The extra $20 at the end was for the treasury to monetize the coin to make it legal for a collector to own.
The owner is a secret.
There have been ten more of these coins confiscated and are currently being held in Ft. Knox.
1804 Draped Bust
Another high-dollar sale was the Eliasberg speciman of the coin you see at the right.It was a proof 65 and sold for $1,815,000 in 1997.
The coin here is the Child's speciman and is proof 68.If it goes up for auction,be ready for bids to reach well over $2,000,000.

In 1913 the mint was switching from the Liberty or "V" nickel to the Buffalo nickel.No Liberty nickels were to be minted.Somehow five slipped out of the mint.
The Eliasberg speciman went up for auction in 1996 and sold for $1,485,000.
I keep looking in my change hoping to find one.

Great information on coins.
Canada just made a 100 kg pure gold coin with a face value of $1,000,000 however it is already worth much more with gold passing the $960 per oz mark.

A North Indian Coin from region of PUNJAB and depicts the Sikh faith. A rare coin purportedly minted 260 years ago in 1748 by one of the Sikh missals. (Minted 1804 is Hindu calendar call Vikram Smavat started 56 years ahead of Georgian Calendar) The coin made of an alloy resembling bronze, bears picture of the first Guru on observe (Date Side) exergues reads Sant Kartar and the tenth Guru on the reverse side. While Guru Nanak Dev is flanked by Bhai Mardana and Bhai Bala, holding rabab(Violin like instrument) and chaur(Hand-held Fan) in their hands, a bai is seen sitting near Guru Gobind Singh. Also shown in the picture are the khrawan (slipper made of wood) and a lota(small water pot). Mr Amarjit Singh Sidhu, a Sikh historian, agreed to the claim and maintained that the ambiguity about the pictorial and mohar coins was due to lack of concern shown by successive governments about the Sikh history. It was certainly after October 14, 1745, that the chief of missals started minting coins in the names of the ten Gurus. The very fact the coin bears pictures of the first and the tenth Guru shows that it was not minted during the regime of any sovereign ruler, pointed Mr Sidhu. Referring to the pages of history, Mr Sidhu said each chief tried to strengthen his hold over the areas under his control and even started minting coins. A number of mints in Amritsar and one at Anandgarh came into existence. But a special feature of these mints was that coins were minted by all in the name of the Sikh Gurus as had been the traditional practice and no chief put his name on these coins or even changed the legend. I WANT TO SALE 1 RUPEES COIN 1947, ONLY 225000.OO ONLY, The reverse of this coin , struck in nickel , shows one rupee written in englsih at the top, in hindi at the left and in urdu at the right. Apart from India and 1947, the year, we can see a lion.
Some of the coins minted in British India were also proof, and thus we had the earliest proof coins in India. The gold mohar of William IV had a nice symbol on the reverse, that of a lion and a palm tree. When the reserve bank was created, a symbol had to be defined for it. The lion and palm symbol was chosen for the bank, and that symbol is issued to date and also minted on some coins as in the case of this one rupee coin. This one is one of my favorite coins.Albert Frederick Arthur George (George VI) was the king of England from 11 december 1936 to 6 Feb 1952, when he died. He was the last king of India until 1947, so this is the one of the last coins of British India. This one is made of nickel.
