Survival series-edibles
62I am going to put together a whole series on survival techniques. We will start with basic edibles;plants,berries,fruits,roots,etc...I am putting the Survivor link. After you finish these lessons you can probably win it.Never know!!!
Morel mushrooms
Warning!!
It is very, very important that you absolutely make sure the plant you are going to eat is what you think it is.There have been many people poisoned from eating poison hemlock when they mistook it for wild carrots. There are many mushrooms that are edible, but many that are poisonous too.The highly prized morel mushroom{I love them!!}has a look-a-like that is poisonous. The way I tell is there are no bugs inside the poisonous one when you harvest it.
All the mushrooms you see here are edible.
I am now going to load you with pictures of edible plants.Look closely at the leaf structures and if need be print them.Remember, always be safe!
The edibles
I will explain each of the plants at the right starting with the Arrowroot. You can eat the leaves cooked or raw.Great on salad.
Picture #2 is the Bush Honeysuckle. In May the berries are great!!
Picture #3 is the Cattail. If you peel all the outer leaves down to the tender meaty part it tastes like cucumbers.YUM!!!
Next we have that every nice lawns nightmare, the Dandelion.I don't eat the root, but all the other parts are quite edible.I especially love dandelion wine!
Picture #5 is the Firethorn. You can eat the berries whenever they are there. They may be more sour at certain times, but will sustain you.
And the last edible picture is Pokeweed.Don't ever eat the root{poisonous}Cook the leaves in boiling water.
Inedibles
All these next pictures are inedible.
First is the Broadleaf.Too bitter! You then have the European Chestnut which is poisonous.Next is the Golden Rod which will make you sick and the Wood Aster will too!
In upcoming hubs we will look at other food sources too.Such as:trapping,cleanin,fishing,etc..
Come back and check often if you want to be a survivor!!!!

My Seven Favorite North American Edible Wild Plants, by Paul C.http://www.survivalblog.com/2008/03/my_seven_favor
I pick and eat wild greens that I add to green smoothies. It is best to pick young, fresh health leaves and eat them raw. You receive the highest amount of nutrients this way.
I too hunt and consume wild free foods, and I Love your Lens Froggy! Are you sure the second last pic is a Goldenrod? I don't recall the purply-redish stem?
Some nice photos too. Which digicam do you use?
Have a large day,
LarryB
Oooops! I meant to say Hub page there, not Lens! :-)

This is great! My dad would be interested in this. Because I don't know the names of the plants you have listed, could you caption them? I see the names in the text, but it's kind of confusing... :-\
